Glenwood Properties: Riverdale

Riverdale Buildings

Riverdale Neighborhood

At more than three square miles, Riverdale is one of the largest New York City neighborhoods, leading some to call it a “mini-borough.” There are several neighborhoods-within-the-neighborhood including North Riverdale, Fieldston, Central Riverdale, South Riverdale and Spuyten Duyvil. The area boasts one of the highest elevations in New York City, affording spectacular views of the Empire State Building, George Washington Bridge, and the Hudson River. Riverdale offers a very suburban feel with some of the most beautiful tree-lined streets in New York.

Briar Hill – 600 & 630 West 246 Street

Combining suburban pleasure with urban living, Briar Hill is only 20 minutes from Manhattan, making it prime NYC real estate. This beautiful, four-acre country setting includes a huge outdoor swimming pool, bar, tennis courts, children’s playground and fitness center. Many of the spacious, airy one, two and three-bedroom apartments offer lovely views of The Hudson River or bustling New York City.

Riverdale Neighborhood Highlights

Outstanding Schools

Riverdale is home to three outstanding  schools that offer a diversified educational experience.  The Horace Mann School was founded in 1887 and became an independent day school for K-12 students in 1947. The sprawling 18-acres campus overlooks Van Cortlandt Park in the Fieldston neighborhood. Also in Fieldston is the progressive Ethical Culture Fieldston School. The school dates back to 1878 and today educates more than 1,700 students in K-12 and is “committed to excellence in education as it seeks to develop the intellectual, artistic and moral potential of its students.” The Riverdale Country School, founded in 1907, is an independent school for pre-k through grade 12 students focusing on liberal arts to create a balanced educational experience.

Wave Hill House

A former residence of Mark Twain’s, Wave Hill House and Gardens is an 11-acre estate that includes public gardens and a cultural center. The house was originally built in 1843 and, besides the Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn author, the property has been home for such dignitaries as Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini in the 1940’s and the British delegation to the United Nations in the 1950’s. It is currently owned by the City of New York and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Manhattan College

This private Roman Catholic college was founded in 1853 in Manhattan but moved in 1922 to the Bronx to its current location in Riverdale. The liberal arts school offers undergraduate degrees in arts, business, education, health and sciences. Manhattan College also offers graduate programs in several areas and U.S. News and World Report ranked the school as one of the Top 20 Regional Universities in the North for 2014.

Van Cortlandt Park

Van Cortlandt Park is one of the most magnificent public parks in the New York metro area. Located on 1,146 acres, the park offers miles of nature trails, interactive educational facilities, multiple sports fields/courts, and a variety of playgrounds. Dog lovers appreciate the three dog runs and bird watchers “flock” to the park for unique opportunities to spot native and migratory birds.
